It’s little moments like these that remind me of how beautiful life is. Today ended on the highest note I can possibly imagine and it’s funny because nothing extraordinary happened. This is the first time since I’ve gotten here that I’ve had the apartment to myself and the solitary silencio is amazing. I don’t feel like I have the words to describe how lovely it is to sit and enjoy dinner with a glass of white wine overlooking the city of Santiago at night. Watching and listening to the sounds and enjoying me is such a gift, especially after this crazy week of solemnes y clases finales…Gracias Santiago por ser tu mismo…chau (for now)

I haven’t posted about it, but I have an internship teaching English in two public colegios in the city. Today at my second school, none of our regular kids showed up for class and lately attendance had been dwindling…so we did a little recruiting. I have to say that I can attribute the dwindling attendance to the fact that our class (I’m not the only tia) is not required by the school and the fact that the majority of the children at this specific school are in one class at varying levels of English and have no confidence speaking up among the fact that they only come when there aren’t other things to do (i.e. play futbol in the schoolyard). We got to the school early and talked to several kids who told us they had an interest in learning the language but that they didn’t know about our class or that it didn’t fit the schedule. We ended up only having 6 students in class today but it was the best!!! Mis ~~recruited~~ chiquillos were so great because they were genuinely interested and interacting with us, unlike the majority of our normal students which just made my day!!!

Okay so this past week has been a lot and this week coming up is going to be a WHOLE LOT more…mostly because my birthday is coming up on Saturday and I’m trying to make plans and be thrilled about it but it’s just not the same knowing that my family won’t be here to celebrate with me. This past week was full of classes and trying to figure out a budget for my time here and what I’m going to be doing with the rest of my time here (I’ll be here until July). I’m a bit disappointed with myself for the way my time here has gone so far. I think Santiago is an awesome place with so much to see and do but I haven’t done much since I’ve been here. My goal for my time here is to become more than a tourist. I want to find something in Santiago that I can consider to be my own whether it’s a hole in the wall jazz club or a paint studio that no one knows about. I really want to be able to say it was more than just a tourist experience. Also, I don’t think my Spanish is improving and I need to make friends with some native Spanish speakers so that I have someone to practice with. So, I signed up for a program where I’ll be meeting an hablante nativo twice a week to help my Spanish and their English, but the program doesn’t start until after I get back from Easter Island…Speaking of Eaaster Island, I’m going to take a crap ton of pictures for you guys but I haven’t been posting the ones I took because I haven’t been able to get my editing software open because the VPN (Virtual protected network) won’t seem to work and I need that to work for me to open a lot of stuff on my computer. Other than that, things are going well but I really have to work on not procrastingating on getting my class reading assignments done and I need to pick up my Chilean ID tomorrow. I’ll talk to you guys later!

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted something on this blog, and for that: I apologize. There has been so much going on here in Chile, including the official start of classes and some computer issues…Hopefully I’ve be able to get my photo editing software back up and running so I’ll be able to post the tons of pictures I have for you guys! In the past four days, there’s been two earthquakes felt here in Santiago, one of them centered in Santiago. That has been quite the experience being that I’ve never felt an earthquake before. The girls and I made a true “American” breakfast (pancakes, eggs and OJ) for one of our hosts families on Saturday which was interesting because they kept mentioning how fattening breakfast was and they couldn’t believe that people eat so heavy in the morning! I still have so much to tell you guys but I need to get dressed so I’ll do my best to post later.
